MS OS Development

December 17, 2003 at 2:45 pm | blabbing.

This comment from SWB posted on Slashdot about “Microsoft’s New Core OS Team Learning from Linux” I think hits the nail on the head.

Perhaps an organizational change is entirely appropriate and the right thing. I don’t think that anyone would seriously argue that MS doesn’t have any good developers.

What they seem plagued by are marketing-driven technologies that keep getting bolted on to Windows, broadening the code base and making the overall focus of the development harder for anyone to see. This level of integration may make IIS faster or enable easier functionality for some third party development, also makes it hard to define what Windows core is and who’s responsible for it.

A group of developers focused on the core of Windows (kernel, networking, filesystem) should be able to better focus on making it work well and keep security at a higher level, among other things.

The real challenge will be who defines what the core of Windows is, and what they define it to be. If they allow the scope of Windows core to be everything you get in C:\ after installing the OS, it won’t be more than cosmetic. However, if they define it succintly and at least internally acknowledge that the kernel, the filesystem and the networking code is the core, and other stuff like IIS or Internet Explorer is not, this could mean real benefits for Windows.

Xmas Cards

December 14, 2003 at 8:05 pm | blabbing.

For all of my friends and family who opened their christmas cards from Alanna and I and said “What the?”

Relax, it’s a Haiku. It’s not some sort of bizarre christmas clue.

My great idea

at 5:36 pm | blabbing.

I had this great idea for doing a simple animated card in Flash that you could easily make and burn onto a CD. Then I turned on my MAC and it already did that.

After a nice breakfast today, Alanna has been a baking maniac. Churning out cookies. I guess I am the designated taste tester. mmmmmm this is a job I can sink my teeth into.

I think the caption should be “You better vote for us!!” “Listen to the old man!!” Everything is perfect. The way the two of them are looking right at the camera, with their heads tilted.

I almost didn’t get to vote. I got to the polling place with 2 minutes to spare. Close but no cigar, sorry Matt.

December

December 3, 2003 at 11:52 pm | blabbing.

Well here it is December already. Damn that was a quick year. I am taking some time to make a new CSS and layout for my site, which should be done in a week or so. Who knows if I will have time to implement it before xmas.

Alanna is kinda sick so she is already asleep. I have had trouble falling asleep over the past couple of nights so I thought I would stay up late on a school night and work on a site design.

We ordered a new computer at work yesterday. It’s a built-to-order HP machine from CostCo. Who would have thought that you could get it from Costco. We will see how this turns out. This is a test for us. If it arrives and we can hook it up to our network without to much headache we will probable order some more. (We need some machines around the office, I have the sporty fast one and mine is a 800Mhz with 256 RAM. Go speed racer)

As I am on a work rant we got some good news that we will be doing some more work for AT&T Mobile. A nice contract for what could turn out to be a year. Pop the corks fellas….

I am getting ready for end of year financials so my brain is already in end of year mode. One for you and one for you and one for you.

Old Ghosts

November 28, 2003 at 8:28 pm | blabbing.

I was playing around with hooking up a new tape deck to my audio workstation at home because I am right in the middle of making some MP3’s out of an old Lily Tomlin tape for my sis when I found an old tape of ancient live band stuff.

ooooohhhhh man this is old music from a band that was called Velveteen Candy. It was recorded live in our rehersal space a long time ago and some of these recordings are the only recorded version of these songs.

It’s good that I have these and made them into MP3’s because I will be putting together an audio section to my site where I can put all the crazy audio stuff that I have been doing. I even have tapes from the band I was in when I was 19. I have also kept track of all the demo songs that I have written over the years on a portable cassettte player. I have tapes going back to 1990. Those have got to be some scary tapes.

Turkey Day

November 27, 2003 at 1:15 pm | blabbing.

After some fun cooking and baking last night with Alanna we have a whole mess of stuffing and cranberries, and a very sporty apple pie as well as a turkey that is cooling off as I write this.

We got up early, cleaned off the bird, wrapped it in bacon and stuffed it in the oven. Then I promptly went back to sleep for another hour. 😉

After watching a little bit of the parades that are on TV I am convinced that they are getting more and more surreal every year. It could have something to do wit the fact that we have the sound down and are listening to the CD player while they are on. But as soon as they start the choreographed John Stamos singing and dancing routines right in the middle of the parade I think they lost me.

Some of the floats were old stand-bys but some were new, like the Cheesasaurus ballon made by craft. I think maybe other companies that would not normally get into the Thanksgiving parade should be given a chance. Like maybe the Depends Adult diaper ballon. Or the Viagra penis float. Maybe the Olestra Colon blow ballon and marching band. Trojan condom ballon??

We are almost set to head over to Liz’s for a nice day.

Happy Face Stuffing Day to Everybody.
